photo - Old Emporium Dome

photo - Old Emporium Dome

The old Emporium dome, getting a new life in the new and very upscale shopping mall, the San Francisco Centre, on the location of the old Emporium department store on Market St. In its early days, the Emporium became one of SF’s most popular destinations, with nightly concerts at the bandstand and restaurant under a 500,000-pound, 102-foot-wide skylit dome three stories tall. The original Emporium dome, built in the 1890s, was the signature feature of what was called “The Grandest Mercantile Building in the World.” The dome was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, but was rebuilt by 1908. In 1927, an addition to the Emporium covered up the lunette windows around the lower part of the dome. The dome was blacked out during World War II and neglected in the decades after that. Most recently it was jacked 60 feet into the air while the empty Emporium department store around it was demolished. Now it has been restored, with the original railings from the rotunda installed amid new columns that are replicas of the originals, the intricate arched lunette windows re-created, and the aged ornamental plaster given fresh coats of proprietary shades of Silver Lining, Timidity and Dawn Mist paint.

Love Fishes

Love Fishes

Today is Valentine day 2006. Instead of roses, I select the love fishes to celebrate this day with Flickr member. This fish,in Japan, is called "Koi" which means Love. It's quite difficult to take photo of fast moving fishes with sunlight in shade. Photo is taken at Chok Chai farm house, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
To take this shot, I inclined more than half body over the pond and my friend just held my hand preventing me falling down to the pond. However, I dropped skylight filter into the water, but got it back later.

Which love fish do you like ?

  • can also refer to the sun-shading eyepiece-type, although the term is not exclusive to these. Also in use is the derivative abbreviation, shades.

Whitehaven Beach

Whitehaven Beach

Whitehaven Beach - #2 in the world (whose job is it to rate these? I want that job) absolutely lives up to the hype. Made up of 98% pure silica, this beach is not only the brightest I’ve seen, but contained some of the finest sand I’ve ever felt; and look at all the different shades of blue here! Members of my boat are making the first footsteps of the day as they walk out to where the sandbar begins, as others traveling around the islands by yacht, tie their dingy up at the end and enjoy the last of their peace before our group arrives. I love this view – and I hope this photo captures that. If it doesn’t do it for you, the next one has to…

Shade for puppy - Bayah

Shade for puppy - Bayah

This stray puppy had been adopted by the surveyors in Bayah. They had constructed a sand-pit and wall as shelter from the sun. It was late afternoon.

Bayah is a village at the far southern end of the Omani exclave of Musandam. It is next to the larger town of Dibba, which is in the U.A.E.
